You’ve finally decided to get a hydroponic growing system – but, where do you place it?
Like outdoor gardening, growing plants indoors has its specific requirements, especially when it comes to the location. Hydroponic growing systems are indeed convenient, but you can just plop them down anywhere. On the contrary, you need to find the right location to ensure your plants thrive.
With that said, in this blog, we’ll share some tips on where to place your indoor hydroponic garden kit for maximum efficiency.
Temperature Consistency
Modern hydroponic growing systems are sleek and sophisticated, meaning they can easily fit into any kind of room. Still, some spots are much better than others.
For one, many beginners make the mistake of placing their system in a room that doesn’t have a consistent temperature, like a garage or a room with improper ventilation. These may seem like convenient locations, but one gust of cold wind in the winter may do quite a number on your plants.
For that reason, make sure your hydroponic growing system is placed in a room where the temperature is around 65-75°F (18-24°C). Additionally, make sure there aren’t any heaters or air conditioners in the area since they can significantly impact the growing conditions.
Ventilation
Another reason why garages aren’t suitable for hydroponic systems besides the temperature? Ventilation.
Plants need plenty of oxygen to thrive, and if the air is stuffy, they’ll do exactly the opposite. Non-ventilated rooms are a breeding ground for pests and diseases, so you need to provide adequate airflow for your greens.
If you’re growing your plants in a confined space, the best thing you can do is install a small fan. It will keep the air fresh, and the breeze also mimics natural wind, encouraging stronger roots.
However, be careful with placing your hydroponic growing system near a window. Not only will your plants be exposed to more light (which can be counterproductive), but it can also invite plenty of bugs and pests from the outside. Screen doors can add a layer of protection, but it’s best to keep the system further away.
Lighting
Lighting may be the least of your problems when it comes to finding the right location for your indoor hydroponic garden kit!
With outdoor gardening, where you place your plants is super important since they need to get enough sunlight throughout the day. But, with hydroponic systems, you can easily control the lighting conditions, meaning the location doesn’t really matter.
Our smart hydroponic system features a built-in app that allows for customized lighting. In other words, you can adjust the timing and choose between plant modes. On top of that, you’ll also get alerts when you need to take action, such as refilling the water tank, so you don’t have to stress about whether you’re doing everything right.
Watering
Like lighting, watering (in terms of location) is one less thing you need to worry about. Hydroponic growing systems need a lot of water, so you need to find an area where you have easy access for it.
Luckily, these systems are sophisticated enough that you only need to refill the water once the levels drop. In fact, the app for our smart hydroponic system will tell you exactly when you need to do that. Plus, they come with bigger reservoirs, so refills will be less frequent.
The only thing you should pay attention to is the drainage. Even though water leaks may be minimal, they can still happen. With that said, don’t place your system on stain-prone surfaces like white carpets.
Convenience
Some hydroponic growing systems are so compact, you can easily fit them into any corner – especially vertical ones! However, you should keep in mind that they need to be easily accessible since you’ll be spending a lot of time tending your plants.
On top of that, your plants will need enough space to grow, so place them accordingly. In some cases, the “less-is-more” approach is favorable since the lack of space can prevent regular airflow, preventing your plants from growing properly.
Finally, once you get the hang of growing plants with hydroponics, you’ll rarely stop with having just one single system. For instance, you’d like to add flowers or more complex veggies to your garden. With that in mind, if you plan on expanding your indoor garden, be sure to have enough space so all of your systems can stay in one place. That way, you won’t need to go back and forth to your systems, saving you some time in the long run.
Where To Place Your Hydroponic Growing System
Now that you know what you need to pay attention to, let’s find the right place for your hydroponic growing system.
Ideally, you should put your indoor gardening kit in a dark and ventilated room, like a basement (if you have one). They’re typically dim, so no extra light will be coming in, and you only need to set up a fan if the room isn’t ventilated enough. Plus, with all the greenery, these rooms will instantly get a refreshed look!
If you don’t have a dark room, you can always place your hydroponic system in your living spaces. As previously mentioned, try not to expose it to temperature fluctuations like cool air coming from ACs or heating devices (this also applies to regular appliances like TVs, ovens, etc.). Lastly, if it’s a high-traffic area, like a den or kitchen, try to fence it off or put it in a corner where it will be protected but still accessible. This especially applies if you have pets – we all know how our furry friends love greens!
Most importantly, don’t mix your hydroponic plants with ones that you grow outdoors. Once temperatures drop, you’ll need to bring them indoors, but they might be carrying pests, which can quickly spread to your outdoor plants.
Remember – the more controlled the area, the better.
